Image Viewer consumes large amounts of memory and CPU, does not view images

On os439dx on XO 1.0 and XO 1.5, opening a picture taken with record from the journal causes Image Viewer to launch and cause X consume a large amount of memory and between them, 100% cpu.

This is reproducible every time. On XO-1.0 with no swap, insufficient memory is available, the system locks and the OOM killer eventually kills X. On XO-1.5, X memory consumption stabilizes at about 250MB.
