and probably we should have a checkbox somewhere so the user can override that decision.

Pushing out to 0.90, need a patch for the functionality, and a design for (possibly) putting the option somewhere in a control panel (though better if it can be automatic and/or a gconf setting).

I don't think an user visible option make sense. I also don't think it make sense to implement this using X these days. Something we can reevaluate when we switch to wayland but not worth to keep around the ticket until then.
