#688 closed defect (obsolete)

There is no stop option on currently running activities in in the home view

Reported by: HoboPrimate Owned by: mchua sdz
Priority: Unspecified by Maintainer Milestone: Unspecified
Component: design Version: Unspecified
Severity: Unspecified Keywords: GPA
Cc: Distribution/OS: Unspecified
Bug Status: Unconfirmed

Description

If yo have a running activity, you should be able to stop it wherever it is represented, including if it shown in the home view. Add an option to stop in the home activity icons which currently have an instance of it open.

Change History (9)

This isn't so clean cut, since it only makes sense for the actual activity instance, and not for the activity bundles themselves, which have until recently been the only item represented in home. I wonder if it would further confuse to offer stop on some colored instances (those that are running) and not on others while in the "resume recent" mode of home, or to have the ability to stop some in the "resume recent" mode and not have this option in the "start new" mode.

Seems overly complicated. There is a stop on the Frame instance and there is a plan to make the stop available in all toolbars of the opened activity. We need to keep it simple.

  • Keywords GPA added

Kids had trouble stopping from within an Activity. Not sure if this is the right solution but some more clarification on stopping and more ways to do it seems in order to me.

See this comment:

  • Kids consistently couldn't find the stop button. Either because it

was on a different tab or because the icon doesn't ring true.

Hi Greg, I am hoping we have made a large dent in this issues for 0.86, the new toolbar designs now have the "Stop" button visible at all times. Toolbar Tabs have gone (so you can't get lost) and are replaced (as needed) with secondary toolbars that appear below the primary toolbar. It will take a while for all (maintained) activities to pick up the new toolbar designs, but we hope to have a fair chunk of the important ones rolled over for 0.86 official release.

  • Component changed from design to SoaS
  • Distribution/OS changed from SoaS to Unspecified
  • Owner changed from eben to mchua sdz

Bulk change distribution=SoaS -> component=SoaS

  • Component changed from SoaS to design

This is a design issue that got accidentally assigned to SoaS during an auto-tag. Reassigning - sorry for the confusion.

On the one hand, I agree with walter on keeping things simple. On another, I've thought of another good reason to have small stop signs after running activities in home icons palettes:
so that a user can tell _which_ recent activities are currently running.

p.s.-question: does eben still work for olpc

Since this ticket was first open, I think the activity team has managed to convert all of the most popular activities to the new toolbar format, where the stop button is always visible. That does make a big difference in terms of stopping activities. We also already include a stop in the hover menu for the "current" activity that is shown under the XO icon in the center of the homeview. The only change we may want to consider is to jump to the secondary menu on that icon instantly as has been discussed ad nausium in a separate thread.

As has been pointed out, we have no way of indicating which activities are currently open from the homeview (the color indicated that it has been opened, but not that it is open) so until we come up with an elegant solution to that problem, I don't think we should take any action as regards this suggestion.
