Thanks for the extensive testing - this is really helpful! :)

I've got some updates here, at least on some of the activities.

  • Pippy has been reverted back to version 25, as we're using the RPM version instead of the XO one now. Maintainers have been asked to update their packages.
  • Speak should work in the next snapshot as espeak has been added to the kickstart file.
  • ViewSlides should also work, as pygame will be in the next snapshot.

I also pinged alsroot on the sound issue.

olpcsound works well in soas-2(it doesnt fetch pulseaudio by default) -- I've installed olpcsound in last soas-2 image, TamTam from ASLO and it sounds good

last pulsaudio works well with gstremer/csound activities thus I enabled it in sugar.ks

Just testing soas2-20090524.vmdk, after a python error during the first boot process (/usr/share/system-config-date/timezoneBackend.py line 57, AttributeError:'module' object has no attribute 'is_selinux_enabled'), it does boot correctly into Sugar after going through a GNOME auto-login config screen.

Looking at the interface scale it looks like the dpi is incorrect for the 800x640 screen dimensions it's giving me (very large icons, frame, interface layout, home view, clipped dialogues etc), though the font looks correct I think this might be bug #871.

Below are the Activities I see installed (seems an odd mix and out of date relative to previous Soas I've tried - Moon is only at v9 for example, and I've never seen 'Mail' before and have no idea where it's source repository is).

Finance-1 --> Keep error when stopped
XoIRC-4 --> launches/stops file, but out of date version
Pippy-25 --> launches/stops fine but font sizes break the list of sources and run controls, out of date
Calculate-28 --> launches/stops fine
Help-9 --> fails to launch
Turtle Art-41 --> launches/stops fine
Jukebox-8 --> launches/stops fine
Write-63 --> launches/stops fine
Moon-9 --> launches but keep error on stop due to out of date version
Image Viewer-7 --> launches/stops fine
Mail-1 --> launches/stops fine, very beta quality at the moment, where did it come from??
Chat-65 --> launches/stops fine
Terminal-25 --> launches/stops fine
Browse-108 --> launches/stops fine
Read-66 --> launches/stops fine
Log-18 --> launches/stops fine
Etoys-100 --> launches/stops fine

Should I spend time testing the vdmk images, or is one of the other image build types more current?

Thanks for giving this a try again! :)

This is since I wasn't sure if auto-login would work in a VM using slim, so nothing more than a work-around right now. It isn't the case in the .iso image.

Looking at the interface scale it looks like the dpi is incorrect for the 800x640 screen dimensions it's giving me (very large icons, frame, interface layout, home view, clipped dialogues etc), though the font looks correct I think this might be bug #871.

Ahhhh! I forgot to change one argument in the kickstart file, so that we're now even getting activities pulled in as RPMs we don't want to include that way. This had already been fixed in the .iso, but will be ported to the appliance, too.

Finance-1 --> Keep error when stopped
XoIRC-4 --> launches/stops file, but out of date version
Pippy-25 --> launches/stops fine but font sizes break the list of sources and run controls, out of date

Hm, okay! I'll be sending out requests to Fedora Package Maintainers to update their RPMs soonish.

Calculate-28 --> launches/stops fine
Help-9 --> fails to launch
Turtle Art-41 --> launches/stops fine
Jukebox-8 --> launches/stops fine
Write-63 --> launches/stops fine
Moon-9 --> launches but keep error on stop due to out of date version

Log-18 --> launches/stops fine
Etoys-100 --> launches/stops fine

Okay, so this looks rather good to me! Finance, XoIRC, Help, Moon and Mail got accidentally included using RPMs. I'll fix this later...

Should I spend time testing the vdmk images, or is one of the other image build types more current?

Well, the .iso images are more stable, but overall, the two images (.iso & .vmdk) should be rather equivalent (they're created on the same date, but the .iso image might still run a bit better).

  • Milestone changed from Unspecified by Release Team to soas_linuxtag
  • Version changed from Unspecified to Git as of bugdate

Replying to garycmartin:

Okay, sounds like these are the activities we need to have a look at:

TamTamSynthLab-52 --> launches/stops fine (sporadic sound crunches)
TamTamMini-50 --> launches/stops fine (no obvious sound)
TamTamEdit-51 --> launches/stops fine (some clicks and bumps)
TamTamJam-52 --> launches/stops fine (no obvious sound)

Those might need to be double-checked by somebody with a different machine.

Develop-39 --> launches, keep error on stop

Maybe the activity maintainer can look into that.

Speak-11 --> launches/stops fine (sound, but not great)
Pippy-25 --> launches/stops fine (UI layout still badly screwed, if any one still cares)

If the (Fedora) package maintainer doesn't push an update soonish, I'll just include Pippy-31 manually.

I'll post an e-mail to the MLs soonish about SoaS current state. Thanks for testing! :)

comment:10 follow-up: Changed 15 years ago by garycmartin

Testing with Soas2-200906191638 (Mac under VM), here's just the main offenders ;-)

Pippy-25 --> still version with bad UI layout
Record-64 --> not working with build in camera, black feed (Mac iSight)
JokeMachine-10 --> default screen size not adjusted for (UI layout to tall in 800x600)
TamTamSynthLab-52 --> sporadic sound crunches, no useful audio
TamTamMini-51 --> small blips of sound, no useful audio
TamTamJam-52 --> very very faint first note of sound then nothing, no useful audio
TamTamEdit-51 -->some faint clicks and bumps, no useful audio
Develop-39 --> works but *very* small text font for editing source code
Jigsaw Puzzle-7 --> default screen size not adjusted for (UI layout to tall in 800x600) some buttons off screen
Speak-11 --> worked but often crashed with pcm_pulse.c:361: pulse_write: Assertion 'pcm->stream' failed.

FWIW: Several of the MaMaMedia Activities had reasonably working sound (CartoonBuilder and StoryBuilder come to mind), and also Speak worked kind'a OK (but not great, slightly choppy), so the TamTam set seem to be behaving worse than others (or have much tougher needs to meet).

Heh. ;) Thanks again - this feedback is really useful!

Pippy-25 --> still version with bad UI layout

Okay, finally included 31 in a new snapshot (will announce that in some minutes).

That's really not good! Sounds like we'll need to exclude it for the final image. I'll leave it in for the next snapshot and drop it afterwards, if needed.

Develop-39 --> works but *very* small text font for editing source code

Hm! Not sure, if we should get this then or not...

what would have changed in the underlying system? TamTam worked fine in earlier versions of SoaS.

A one liner in develop a two liner in pippy.

Camera:
I have a logitech Quick-Cam. Works well in Record and - hey in Pippy :p You can test as well using cheese (yum install cheese)- to see if we do something wrong (might be a general issue with the driver under linux).

Sound: I have the same issues. Sounds a bit like buffering issues. I get some sound - but not very on point.

Don't have Soas to test Pippy -- can someone attach a screenshot so I can see what the issue is? The two Monospace 8 mentions in pippy_app.py I see correspond to the source text view and python output (vte) pane, are those the problematic areas?

Yes, you only need to change those two occurrences. I tested it on Soas as working fine. Would be awesome!

Thanks,

Simon
