Touch support for text entries in upstream in Gtk3.18+ now. It is quite nice and deals with the copy/cut/paste popup as well as adding a magnifier glass over the text view.
It uses a popover, which has an arrow (not used anywhere else in sugar), however it is still palette colours and borders.
I'll just say that gtk has fixed this for us.
