I went looking for L10n to migrate from upstream and I found no signs of i18n/L10n present upstream. IMHO, this represents a "bug" in gnuchess that should be reported on their bugs list.
The questions is, are we willing to supply a "patch" to provide the i18n. I'm sure they could get L10n hosting on the Gnome Damned lies server if they asked. What do you think ofthis?
I'm fine setting this up in our Pootle instance, but I think we should still push for upstream i18n/L10n anyway as a reasonable form of downstream feedback.

Before complaining upstream, I have to look more closely at gnome-games
