Sugar doesn't DHCP connecting to ad-hoc wifi point

Description
Our smartphone shares 3G connection over ad-hoc wifi and Sugar fails to DHCP, whereas Gnome's nm-applet works fine.
In several attempts in Terminal I can connect using iwconfig and dhclient commands.
This is independent of the hardware.
