brightness is not linear because AGC is not disabled, the attached files disable AGC by keeping the camera open between reads

I think ​http://git.sugarlabs.org/turtleart/mainline/commit/ce7e2e77fad7021e25b01f9ad03159733ff5dff4 takes care of this one as best we can (there seems to be a saturation issue independent of autogain).
