Description

Running 0.82.1 sugar installed from repository using apt-get. The Browse activity starts to launch, pulses the world icon, but after a while times out and fails to launch without an error message at all. Icon page just disappears and I'm back at the Home page. I can ping the router ok using Terminal.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. Without logs from the bug it's very hard to determine what caused it. Can you get us logs? Please see http://sugarlabs.org/go/BugSquad/GetLogs for more information on how to do so. Thanks in advance!

Which version of Browse are you using?

There was a hulahop issue: whenever a firefox update comes out on Ubuntu, hulahop fails to find libxul.so as the path changes from /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.0.4 to /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.0.5.

Fixed in Ubuntu, and then broken again yesterday by another update. Reported in Ubuntu as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sugar-hulahop/+bug/328033

AFAICT, the symptom should be fixed (=> closing this bug), but the underlying problem (#137) remains, so it can reappear any time an xulrunner security update is done.
Feel free to reopen anytime you're experiencing this issue.

This is still broken in the repos for Ubuntu 8.04. Please, a security update for XULrunner, or information on setting config to use native system resources, Sugar on Ubuntu on a PC, not on the XO!

  • Summary changed from [Sugar emulator on Ubuntu 8.04] Browse doesn't launch. to [Sugar emulator on Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10] Browse doesn't launch.

I have the same problem now in a new situation. I have installed Ubuntu (xfce4 as window manager) 8.10, the distribution created by Teapot reported on OLPCNews/forum. It's running from a 2GB SD card in my XO-1. I installed on it the Sugar Emulator and Sugar Activities packages for Ubuntu 8.10, downloaded from Sugarlabs.org. When I launch Browse in that environment, it does the same as I reported for Ubuntu 8.04 -- Browse start to launch, pulses the Browse icon, then silently quits and the Sugar Home page displays again. I ran "top" command during this attempt to see if it's a lack of memory space, but there still is 3000 to 12000k of free RAM during the launch. When I launch sugar-emulator from the Ubuntu terminal, it gives some debug info when the launching starts, but no message when it fails and Home is re-displayed.

The log files are usually revealing in such circumstances. Can you please attach them?
