The system gradually choked, apparently on the inability to expand existing files. Each successive boot was less functional, until it couldn't even reach a command line. When I recreated the drive, allocating 530 MB in Create a USB Startup Disk, I got a system that boots and runs with only the usual Ubuntu package bugs. df -h says I have 338 MB free.
