TTS for EPUBs in Read Activity repeats the same phrase over and over

I tried out text to speech with the EPUB of "Ancient Manners" by Pierre Louys, which is one I am proofing by hand. I asked it to speak the first page of the first chapter. It speaks the title of the chapter, then part of the first sentence, then goes back to the title, then the first sentence, and so on. It doesn't go quite back to the beginning. You really have to try it to understand what it is doing.

The book I used may be downloaded here:

It seems to have the same exact problem with any page in the book.

Plain text text to speech works fine. Only EPUB seems to have the problem.
