when the TAB key is pressed, should the names of the active users display as a status message, or they should be appear in the chat box?

What should happen if there are more than one name that start with the characters typed? Should it suggest you about the names that match that word? How it should be suggested?

Personally, I think it sounds like an overkill for current Chat design.

There is no roster list (to see what people you need to address your message), you cannot type "someone: message" to alert "someone", etc.

Implementing all these features will mean creating one more IM client. The more appropriate way might be looking how to make existing software useful in Sugar (and keep chat as an example of simple IM for Sugar to let newbies experiment with its sources).

This makes sense to me. I agree with you: "keep the activity simple and useful"

Maybe this ticket could be closed as "wontfix" by this reason.
