F11 boot helper CD

Reported by: CarolineM Owned by: erikos
Priority: Urgent Milestone: Unspecified
Component: Sugar on a Stick (SoaS) Version: 0.84.x
Severity: Critical Keywords:
Cc: sdz, erikos, garycmartin Distribution/OS: Unspecified
Bug Status: New

Description

I have booted a toshiba laptop using boot.iso and
http://download.sugarlabs.org/soas/snapshots/1/Soas-200901271941.iso

It boots, lets me type a few letters, then the keyboard locks up. I can use the mouse but can't type and can't click next

I'll see if the problem replicates on any other hardware.

Can you see if a normal Fedora exhibits the same kind of problems? In general I'd suggest you keep a Fedora 10 usb stick around, so that you can do this kind of testing when you run into hardware related problems.

  • Bug Status changed from Unconfimed to Needinfo
  • Distribution/OS changed from Unspecified to SoaS
  • Summary changed from Toshiba satellite locking up to Toshiba satellite locking up with boot.iso

Is this still an issue? If so, please update; or you perhaps you can close this ticket.

Thank you for reporting!

I need to create a boot helper because my toshiba only boots from CD. I thought I should update that also (I Was useing F9 before) but I ran into Ticket 495.

So my current status is I am blocked from testing on the toshiba.

Thanks for keeping me current on this!

Using the 9.92 boot helper and SoaS-1 from 3-05 this is still occuring.

I created a F10 liveCD it did boot and keeps running but reports a kernel error. It seems to run fine though.

Do you think there is hope if I burn F10 to the hard drive and then try to install sugar?

Do you think the Kernal error is the root of the problem we are seeing sugar?

Ok dsd helped figured this out.

Its this bug. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=470215

We maybe seeing it because the boot helper is F9.9.

Can we get a nice shinny up to date boot helper and we can try again?

Thanks!

Hi,

What is a good way to get someone to take on this task? Shouldn't be that hard and it would be great to get this computer into the School's hands so they can start experiementing with Sugar.

Thanks

Hi Gary,

does your boot helper cd works?

Thanks,

Simon

Replying to erikos:

does your boot helper cd works?

Hi Simon, sorry no, not for the (Mac) hardware I've tried it on – the CD boots up fine, then after a little while it drops back to a console complaining it can't find a root filesystem. Could well be it's just not finding/mounting the USB device on recent Mac hardware. BTW, the CD boot helper is actually from marco, the original seems to have been lost so I re-uploaded the copy I had been testing here, at tomeu's request.

  • Bug Status changed from Needinfo to New
  • Priority changed from Unspecified by Maintainer to Urgent
  • Severity changed from Unspecified to Critical
  • Summary changed from New boot helper CD is needed to F11 boot helper CD

I am moving this to Critical Status because I think/hope that it will solve our problems at the GPA and Shaw Schools.

At GPA - SoaS1 + Boothelper 9.9 can not find the network card or see the internet. Straight F11 seems to work better. I'm hoping that a F11 Boothelper with have the driver we need. http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/GPA

At Shaw we are also having a driver issue. I am less optimistic about F11 fixing it but its still worth a try. http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Shaw_Elementary_School

Also I am optimistic about it making the donated Toshiba laptop work and the GPA school really wants to start playing with Sugar.
