No feedback when loaded with no external media

Description
Steps to reproduce:
- ensure that no external media are connected
- start Backup
What happens:
- most of the screen is plain grey
- only the stop button is usable
- the media drop-down and the backup button are greyed out
What should happen: the user should get a message reminding them to plug in an external media device before starting Backup.
The problem at the moment is that it is unclear that Backup requires external media to be connected in order to back up.

Version 4 shows minimal instructions in the main view. Not exactly pretty, but hopefully better than nothing.
